We are the Ants by Shaun David Hutchinson

About: Abducted by aliens periodically throughout his youth, Henry Denton is informed by his erstwhile captors that they will end the world in 144 days unless he stops them by deciding that humanity is worth saving.

Ofilia’s Thoughts: Henry is dealing with a lot: his boyfriend committed suicide, his mother wants to put his grandmother in a home and his brother is dropping out of college because his girlfriend is pregnant. Oh and then there is the constant annoyance of being abducted by aliens. Henry doesn’t know why the sluggers (aliens) chose him, but he does know that they are giving him a choice: the world is going to end and Henry has the option of stopping it. The trouble is he isn’t sure he really wants to do that. This book tackles some heavy topics, but handles it all with a keen sense of humor. There are no easy answers and sometimes the answers you do get, aren’t the ones you were hoping for. There is lots of drama here, but it doesn’t ever feel melodramatic. The writing is amazing and the characters feel very familiar and real. Sprinkled with doomsday scenarios throughout, this book reminds us that it can all be over any second, but if you are doing it right it will have all been worth it.
